How You Contribute
Focus on the Family’s Social Media and Podcasting department helps extend the ministry’s content and mission to digital audiences across social platforms, YouTube, and podcasts. Our team develops, packages, publishes, and evaluates content with the goal of reaching people where they are and helping them engage more deeply with Focus on the Family. As an intern, you would contribute to real social media and podcasting work while learning how content strategy, creative execution, platform algorithms, and audience analytics work together in a professional organization.
Responsibilities - What Does “A Day in the Life” Look Like?
In this internship, the intern may:
- Assist with creating, editing, packaging, and publishing short-form and long-form social video content.
- Review social media and podcast performance data to identify patterns in reach, retention, engagement, audience growth, and content performance.
- Research platform trends, algorithms, best practices, emerging formats, and successful content from other creators and organizations.
- Participate in team meetings, content planning, brainstorming, performance reviews, and strategic discussions about how to reach and grow digital audiences.
- Support podcast and social workflows through tasks such as identifying strong clips, writing or refining copy and metadata, selecting hooks, and adapting content for different platforms.
- Contribute to special growth experiments, which may include helping launch and develop Focus on the Family clip channels using existing short-form content and applying what is learned to grow new audiences.
Goals - How Do We Want You to Learn and Grow?
Through this internship, the intern will have the opportunity to:
- Learn how professional social media strategy differs from personal social media use, including how audience, mission, platform, format, and organizational goals shape content decisions.
- Gain hands-on experience with social video editing, content packaging, publishing workflows, podcast promotion, and multi-platform distribution.
- Develop skills in analytics and strategic thinking - including how to evaluate why content succeeds or fails, identify the elements that can make content highly shareable, and use performance data to improve future content.
- Understand how social media and podcasting work with video production, marketing, creative, digital, and other ministry teams to support larger organizational goals.
- Grow in creative judgment, audience development, workplace communication, professionalism, collaboration, and the ability to make recommendations based on both instinct and data.
Experience - What Are We Looking for in a Candidate?
Ideal candidates should have:
- Pursuing a degree in communications, marketing, digital media, journalism, video production, broadcasting, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
- A strong personal understanding of social media platforms and digital culture, with demonstrated interest in how and why content performs.
- Strong creative instincts, communication skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn both the creative and analytical sides of social media.
- Ability to interact professionally with coworkers, partners, guests, and ministry constituents and to receive feedback well.
- A desire to learn and grow in social media strategy, audience development, video editing, podcasting, analytics, and digital content production.
- Examples of social media, video, podcast, or other digital content work are encouraged but not required; personal projects or channels may be included.
