Summary

Requirements

Training and Experience

  • Attainment of graduate degree in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited university OR Attainment of B.A. or B.S. in Mass Communications, Journalism, New Media, Web Design, Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or related degree program.
  • Two years of directly related experience.
  • Experience managing multiple social media channels.

Preferred Experience

  • Directly related experience in libraries.
  • Experience managing a website.

Highly Desirable Experience

  • Experience with video editing.
  • Experience training others in digital tools and services.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Comprehensive knowledge of:

  • Website and social media management, including the legal and marketing aspects of same.
  • Multiple social media platforms including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube and Tumblr.

Good Knowledge of current technology.

Some knowledge of:

  • Functions and operations of a public library system;
  • HTML and user interface design;
  • A variety of end-use devices for accessing electronic content.

Skills to:

  • use a content management system to create graphics, themes/templates and overall design for the library’s web site;
  • create and manage engaging content for the library’s website and social media presence;
  • maintain a simple HTML website for a library consortium;
  • train other staff in the ethical and effective production of digital content;
  • provide customer service to the public for their use of the library’s electronic resources and train other staff to do the same.
  • understand and follow complex written and oral instructions;
  • use resourcefulness, tact, courtesy, and respect in dealing professionally with library patrons, employees and vendors;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, department heads, employees, vendors and the public;
  • communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to groups and individuals
  • deal with multiple and extra unexpected tasks and patrons simultaneously;

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stand, walk, sit, twist, use hands to finger, grasp, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, talk and hear. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, crouch, squat, kneel, and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or carry up to 20 pounds, frequently lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for daily maintenance of the Library’s website and social media presence.
  • Responsible for regular maintenance of a library consortium website, with input from other participating libraries.
  • Cooperates with the Information Technology department to troubleshoot the Library website and other electronic resources and provides expert input into new products under consideration.
  • Coordinates with the Marketing and Development Manager and Marketing Team to promote the image and messages desired by the library.
  • Trains library staff and patrons on the use of digital resources as needed; resolves problems; writes documentation to assist patrons in using these resources.
  • Routes patron requests for information on other library services received through the website and social media outlets to the appropriate department; facilitates web-based interactions between library staff and patrons.
  • Maintains links to library database subscriptions in cooperation with the Acquisitions department.
  • Is responsible for the visual design and arrangement of the Library’s website, within the basic design elements set up by the content management system. Uses content creation skills to produce a responsive and attractive e-branch portal.
  • Makes decisions, with input from supervisor as needed, concerning requests from vendors, patrons or outside organizations for content to be added, links to the web page, or mentions on social media.
  • Creates content for and maintains content calendar for social media outlets and webpage.
  • Maintains records and statistics as required.
  • Attends monthly staff meetings as well as meets quarterly with supervisor for work review meeting. Attends other meetings as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Present Schedule

Monday – Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

This is an exempt position with a basic schedule of Monday – Friday during regular business hours. Occasional schedule changes may be required as related to assigned projects. Work outside of these hours may be required.

SALARY

$1,114.00/weekly + benefits. Note: a 12% deduction is required for employees participating in the retirement plan through the city of Shreveport.

A criminal background check and a drug screening are part of the pre-hire process. The State of Louisiana Bureau of Criminal Identification and Information and these checks will be conducted on a yearly basis for positions which provide outreach to daycare centers. A mandatory full day orientation is part of the new hire process; these orientations are scheduled on Tuesdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
