Position Overview
The Bilingual Social Media Specialist supports DPSF's fundraising and engagement goals through bilingual storytelling, social media management, and community-centered communications.
Working closely with the Development & Communications Director and program staff, this role will help transform program updates, student and educator stories, community partnerships, and organizational impact into compelling communications that deepen engagement and inspire action.
The ideal candidate is a strong communicator who can build relationships across teams, translate and adapt content for multiple audiences, and help connect community members to meaningful opportunities to support Durham Public Schools.
This position requires both independent initiative and strong collaboration. Success depends on working effectively with staff across the organization to gather stories, create content, and advance shared goals.
Core Responsibilities
Social Media & Bilingual Communications (40%)
- Manage DPSF's social media presence across platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn
- Create, schedule, and publish content in both English and Spanish
- Translate and adapt communications from English to Spanish while maintaining tone, clarity, and accessibility
- Apply DPSF's Language Justice Guide and plain language principles across communications
- Develop content that highlights impact, builds community awareness, and encourages deeper engagement with DPSF
- Support real-time content creation and posting from events and community activities
- Monitor engagement and recommend opportunities to strengthen audience growth and participation
- Ensure communications consistently connect impact stories to opportunities for community members to become Public School Champions
Storytelling & Content Development (40%)
- Gather stories, updates, photos, and program highlights from staff and partners
- Attend events, school visits, and community activities to capture photos, stories, and content as schedules allow
- Transform program updates into compelling content for social media, newsletters, blogs, and digital communications
- Collaborate with staff to identify stories that demonstrate impact and community engagement
- Maintain organized content and photo libraries
- Help ensure DPSF's communications center student, educator, family, and community voices
Newsletter & Digital Communications (10%)
- Draft and manage DPSF's monthly e-newsletter using updates from social media, programs team, and organizational priorities
- Format and distribute newsletters
- Support audience segmentation and list management
- Track key engagement metrics and identify opportunities to improve performance
Team Collaboration & Communications Support (10%)
- Participate in monthly program meetings to stay informed about organizational priorities and upcoming opportunities
- Support communications planning across departments and initiatives
- Coordinate with staff to ensure timely collection of content and information
- Contribute to an impact-focused communications culture across the organization
What Success Looks Like
- Social media content is consistently published in both English and Spanish
- DPSF maintains a timely, engaging, and mission-aligned social media presence
- Program stories and updates are transformed into compelling content that supports fundraising and community engagement goals
- Monthly e-newsletter is drafted and distributed on schedule with strong audience engagement
- Communications consistently connect DPSF's impact to opportunities for community members to become Public School Champions
- Staff view communications as a collaborative process and regularly contribute stories, updates, and content
Skills & Qualifications
- Fluency in spoken and written English and Spanish, with the ability to translate and adapt content for different audiences while maintaining tone, clarity, and accessibility
- Strong writing, editing, storytelling, and content development skills
- Experience managing social media accounts and creating content for organizations, businesses, schools, nonprofits, or community initiatives
- Experience creating content in Canva or similar design platforms
- Experience using email marketing and constituent relationship management systems, including Mailchimp, Neon CRM, or similar tools
- Ability to organize and manage multiple projects, deadlines, and content streams simultaneously
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships across teams and with diverse stakeholders
- Ability to work independently while remaining highly collaborative and responsive to team needs
