The Part-Time Social Media Intern plays a key role in advancing the KU Memorial Unions brand by creating engaging digital and social media content and strategies. This position will contribute to the marketing team’s efforts to reflect the Union’s Misson, values and principles in their digital presence and in person. The multimedia intern brings creativity, enthusiasm, and a strong understanding of social media trends to develop content that connects with the campus audience and strengthens the Union’s online presence. The intern will have strong writing and communication skills to help effectively convey the Union’s voice and communicate well with the campus community.

Duties & Responsibilities Of All Ku Memorial Union Positions

Adhere to University and KU Memorial Union policies and procedures.

Demonstrate the organization’s core values and apply the seven Team Principles in your role by aligning your work with our Lines of Effort: Our People, Engaging Programs, Outstanding Service, Collaborative Partnerships, Inviting Spaces, and Budget Management.

Support the KU Memorial Unions End State as described by the Executive Director, and work to achieve and uphold the department’s mission and core values: community, dignity, empowerment, excellence, innovation, and safety.

Follow the 7 Team Principles: competence, creating a cohesive team through mutual trust, creating shared understanding, setting clear leader intent, written/verbal communication, disciplined initiative, and risk management.

Demonstrate a positive, solution-oriented attitude in performing job responsibilities and collaborating with colleagues to foster a respectful and productive work environment.

Always exhibit professional decorum while representing the KU Memorial Unions and the University, including routine events and meetings that occur outside of the office, around campus, and out in the community.

Essential Functions

Create Social Media Content: Film and edit social media content for our digital platforms including but not limited to: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok. (Our main accounts: @kuunions, @kudining, @kubookstore)

Craft Copy writing: Write social media captions, emails, event descriptions and

other relevant copy.

Engage with Campus: Attend events outside of your regularly scheduled shift with some evenings as needed, with appropriate conduct outreach and representation of our brand to the campus community. Provide live social media coverage of attended events.

Email Marketing: Create engaging emails for students, faculty, and parents.

Social Media Growth: Develop new ideas and strategies to help our platforms and audiences grow. Edit Reels, TikToks, and photos.

Campus News: Keep your finger on the pulse of what’s happening on campus and other relevant news.

Project Management: Manage everyday tasks, and project needs by utilizing Asana.

MINIMUM Requirements

Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences.

Interpersonal Skills: Comfortable and confident in engaging and interacting with others in a dynamic campus environment.

Social Media Proficiency: Proficient in using social media platforms, particularly Instagram and Tik Tok, with a strong understanding of social media trends and best practices.

Comfortability: Comfortable on camera, both taking photos and being filmed in digital content.

Availability: Available to work between 9:00 Am – 5:00 PM (Based on scheduled hours), Monday through Friday, with some evenings and weekends as needed, with advance notice.

Experience: Demonstrated experience in copy writing, content creation and editing. Experience or practice in conducting street style or professional interviews. Knowledge of best practices to grow a social media following and increasing engagement.

This position operates in a professional office setting and routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, mobile devices, printers, and copiers. The role requires flexibility and adaptability, including the ability to adjust to changing priorities and respond to job-related needs on short notice. This position may also require travel to multiple on-campus locations to support operational needs.
