The Social Media Strategist will be responsible for using their extensive knowledge of social media and passion for communications to plan and execute an innovative, integrated and creative social media strategy that successfully and proactively educates, informs and engages citizens and stakeholders on transportation issues across North Carolina.
This individual will be responsible for both long-term strategies and day-to-day implementation across a variety of NCDOT-owned social channels. The Social Media Strategist will be responsible for identifying trends in social conversation and opportunities for deeper audience engagement and community building, and for measuring impact and success to expand NCDOT’s social media profile and ensure ongoing strategic optimization.
This position will be responsible for developing and maintaining the social media content calendar, which covers multiple accounts across several social media platforms. Responsibilities include:
This employee reports directly to the Deputy Director of Marketing and Creative Services and interacts with department leadership, as well as the Governor's Office.
It is crucial that this employee understands and supports the goals and commitments of NCDOT so they can be effectively communicated internally and externally. The employee must have a strong knowledge of the department's operations and an ability to synthesize complex information so it can be understood by a variety of audiences. They need to have a natural ability to build and maintain relationships, online and off, while being a team player with the confidence to take the lead and guide other employees when necessary (e.g., content development, creation and editing of content, online reputation management).
This position also requires the ability to balance multiple responsibilities under a tight deadline and to maintain professional working relationships with individuals both within and outside the department.
Typical working hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday; however, evenings and weekends may be required depending on crisis and emergency situations.
This position is also be responsible for providing day-to-day supervision, guidance and performance management for assigned social media team member(s), including delegating assignments, reviewing work, setting priorities and ensuring content aligns with the department’s mission and brand standards.

Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, public affairs, media, journalism, English, or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in communications, public relations, or publicity work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
