We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Social Media Specialist II (Hybrid) on our Editorial & Channel Strategy team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.
As a Social Media Specialist II, you will support the growth and engagement of the AMA’s
online communities through audience interaction across social media platforms.
This position serves as a primary day-to-day point of engagement across social
channels by monitoring conversations, responding to comments, identifying
engagement opportunities, and interacting with physicians, patients, health
care leaders, media, and other key audiences. This role collaborates with the
social media, media relations, advocacy, and marketing teams to identify
relevant conversations across established and emerging social platforms.
Responsibilities:
Community Engagement
- Monitor and engage with audiences across social media platforms, responding to comments, questions, and conversations in a timely, professional, and brand-appropriate manner.
- Engage with physicians, patients, policymakers, health care organizations, journalists, influencers, and other key audiences across social platforms.
- Identify opportunities to increase engagement by participating in relevant conversations and interacting with appropriate organizations, thought leaders, and partner accounts.
- Recommend and implement tactics to encourage conversation, increase audience participation, and strengthen community loyalty.
- Monitor audience sentiment, identify potential reputational concerns, and escalate issues as appropriate outside established guidelines as appropriate.
- Help identify advocates, influencers, and community partners who can amplify AMA messaging and initiatives.
Platform & Community Management
- Identify, recommend, and manage engagement opportunities across emerging and evolving platforms, including LinkedIn Groups, Facebook Groups, LinkedIn Events, Facebook Events, WhatsApp, Bluesky, Threads, and future community channels.
- Research platform trends, audience behaviors, and emerging opportunities to support the AMA's social media presence.
- Identify relevant communities and conversations that align with organizational priorities.
- Collaborate with internal teams to support campaigns, live events, advocacy initiatives, and awareness efforts through community engagement strategies.
- Recommend engagement tactics, platform features, and community activities based on audience insights and platform trends.
Social Media Operations
- Assist with day-to-day publishing, scheduling, light graphic design, basic video editing, copy editing, and quality assurance across social media platforms as needed.
- Create or edit simple social graphics, captions, and multimedia assets to support timely content needs and audience engagement.
- Monitor engagement metrics and provide recommendations to support audience interaction and engagement goals.
- Maintain community management workflows, response guidelines, and engagement documentation.
- Collaborate closely with the social media, media relations, advocacy, leadership communications, and marketing teams to support enterprise communications initiatives.
May include other responsibilities as assigned
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent work experience and HS diploma/equivalent education required (P1-P4/M1-M2)
- Years of experience: 3+ years in social media, community management, audience engagement, digital communications, or a related field required.
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, Digital Media, or a related field preferred.

This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $74,160-$98,318. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration and geographical location, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
