Social Media Producer Internship - Summer 2027
The Minnesota Star TribuneThe Minnesota Star Tribune is an innovative modern media organization building on an extraordinary 159-year legacy. With eight Pulitzer Prizes and numerous other accolades, we stand as a beacon of journalistic excellence in Minnesota. We are the heart and voice of the North.
Our mission is to build a better Minnesota by connecting us with the people, ideas, and stories that strengthen our communities. We’re seeking dynamic leaders who are passionate about journalism and democracy to help shape this future. If you are excited about reinventing one of our state’s most trusted institutions and leading us into a new era of growth and excellence, we want to hear from you.
We offer 10-week summer internships with our newsroom Audience Team in Minneapolis MN. For this social media internship, we’re looking for someone who can take a social video from idea to execution — identifying the story and approach, filming and editing it, and, when appropriate, serving as the on-camera host. We select talented, driven college juniors, seniors and graduate students who can handle breaking news and enterprise stories. We expect our interns to come to us with skill and leave with polish and invaluable experience from a major-market newsroom. Interns are paid $850 a week. Interns may be able to apply for any available apprentice positions at the completion of their internship.
Star Tribune is committed to a diverse and inclusive workplace, and it encourages qualified applicants of all backgrounds to apply. Candidates should recognize that legacy news operations must merge diversity-and-inclusion aspirations with audience needs to succeed and support that goal.
We expect our Social Media Producer Intern to have:
- Solid news judgment and experience verifying online content.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write stories.
- Ability to multitask and juggle priorities on deadline.
- Experience creating platform-native social content, particularly for Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, and an eagerness to experiment with emerging platforms and formats.
- Experience shooting, producing and editing short-form vertical video for social platforms, with an understanding of pacing, framing, captions, audio and platform-native storytelling.
- Comfort and confidence appearing on camera, including hosting, interviewing and delivering scripted or unscripted social video.
These producers use strong news judgment and social storytelling instincts to translate Star Tribune journalism into compelling, platform-native content that reaches new and existing audiences. They work closely with digital and social media team members throughout the newsroom to maximize the reach of Star Tribune content.
Qualifications:
We select talented, driven college juniors, seniors and graduate students with a solid journalism background combined with an eagerness to innovate and experiment. Candidates should have experience in daily digital journalism, strong news judgment, excellent communication skills, and a proven track record of collaboration. Strong candidates will demonstrate creative instincts, curiosity about social trends and formats, and an ability to experiment without sacrificing journalistic standards. Candidates should have familiarity with social media platforms and analytics, or the ability to learn such skills quickly. These producers help identify which stories are best suited for social treatment and how they should be presented differently for specific platforms and audiences.
The internship typically runs from early June to early August.
Your application, which must be uploaded by Nov. 13, should include:
- Five to 10 links to social media content that you created, including at least one example that shows your skill in front of the camera. Applications without these submissions will not be considered.
- A resume detailing your journalism experience, and three references, including their titles, phone numbers and email addresses.
- A short memo identifying one Star Tribune story, topic or area of coverage you think could be presented more effectively on social media. Tell us how you would approach it, including the platform, format and creative treatment you would use, and why you think it would connect with audiences.
- Two letters of recommendation. At least one of those letters should come from an editor who has seen you work in a professional environment on deadline. Please do not submit letters of reference from fellow student journalists.
- Reference letters can be attached to your application or emailed to [email protected] with your name in the subject line.
- Must be currently legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H1B status, 0-1, TM, CPT, OPT, etc.). We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa at this time.
Questions? Email Maria Reeve, Executive Director, Culture and Careers, [email protected]. Please do not email your application.
Hourly Compensation:
This internship will be paid at $21.25/hour
