Senior Social Media Officer (Communities)

Eden Project is an educational charity famous for turning an exhausted clay pit in Cornwall into a thriving global garden 25 years ago. Construction has now begun on an exciting new Eden Project in Lancashire set to transform Morecambe Bay seafront into a world-class destination for visitors and learning. Eden Project also delivers UK-wide community outreach programmes that focus on creating strong, resilient communities and encouraging positive action for people and planet.
Reporting to the Senior Digital Design Manager, the post holder will be responsible for the development and delivery of community and campaign focused digital content across our social media channels, as well as community building associated with driving positive change (3.5 days per week). This is a unique opportunity to drive digital engagement and participation in one of Eden Project’s flagship campaigns – The Big Lunch and Big Help Out – which see millions participate every year, as well as our newly launched national campaign – Greentime17 – which encourages people to make spending time in nature a daily habit to boost their health and wellbeing. The post holder will generate engaging year-round community-focused content and promote activities such as our Community Action Programme.
The post holder will also be responsible for creating content for our new Eden Project Morecambe social media channels, growing the audience, connecting with the local community, and keeping them informed and engaged as this new destination develops (1.5 days per week). It’s a significant and inspiring time to join the team, as construction starts ahead of Eden Project Morecambe opening in 2028.

Roles within the Marketing function are responsible for developing and delivering the Eden Project’s brand strategy to build brand profile, awareness and reputation, extending and diversifying its audience reach and engagement, and maximising the delivery of commercial and cause related revenue streams.
The division includes Eden’s brand and audience development, community campaigns, destination and commercial marketing, consumer insight, communications, digital experience and delivery, membership and ticketing activities, building a lasting relationship with current and future audiences, and driving value and revenue in the process.
Role Purpose
The Eden Project, famous for transforming an exhausted clay pit in Cornwall into a thriving global garden 25 years ago, is an educational charity that delivers transformational projects inspiring positive action for the planet, across the UK and beyond. We believe that strong, resilient communities have an important role to play in working with nature and each other to overcome the challenges facing the planet today. Therefore, we run unique UK-wide community outreach programmes which encourage positive action for people and planet and create real social capital on a mass scale.
On top of this, construction has just begun on an exciting new Eden Project in Lancashire, set to transform Morecambe Bay seafront into a world-class destination for visitors and learning, with the project due to open at the end of 2028. This is a new split role based in Lancashire, in which the post holder will join a small and highly creative digital content team, and be responsible for the content creation and community management of the Eden Project Communities and Eden Project Morecambe social media channels, as well as contributing to collaborative posts across Eden’s main channels.
Leading on the design and development of digital campaigns that create a step change in our reach and engagement, the post holder will optimise the engagement with our digital community on social media channels, working on content and campaigns which focus on building social cohesion, helping communities to connect with and take care of nature where they live, and take positive action for the planet.
Key Accountabilities
- Create engaging visual and written content for social media, tailored for different channels and audiences – including photography, video, graphics and compelling captions. Use creativity and innovation to make the most of limited assets, thinking outside the box in order to produce highly engaging content.
- Spot great stories and find creative ways to bring them to life from across our Eden Project Communities Network and build excitement around the new Eden Project Morecambe, as well as support our national campaigns.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of the overall social media and influencer strategy, using ongoing monitoring, testing and evaluation to identify insights, optimise performance and make recommendations for improvement.
- Grow and strengthen our social media presence across multiple channels through effective community management, identifying and responding to trends and opportunities, and using audience insights to inform our approach.
- Maintain consistent brand and tone of voice across all channels, whilst adapting our content and engagement to suit each platform and audience.
- With support and direction from the Senior Digital Design Manager and Head of Marketing, design and deliver low-cost creative digital marketing campaigns that drive participation and engagement in our flagship programmes, The Big Lunch and The Big Help Out, and Greentime17, and use our social platforms to present ideas and content that encourage people to connect with one another and with nature, and take positive action for the planet.
- Work with the wider PR and Marketing team to identify key audiences, influencers and amplifiers, building relationships and delivering collaborations that extend our reach, support campaign delivery and inform social media strategy.
- Work collaboratively with the Marketing team, wider Eden team and external agencies to ensure social media is integrated across our wider communications and marketing activity, identifying opportunities to align messaging, share resources and amplify activity across channels.
- Ensure our funders and sponsors are built into key messages, and content is in line with our campaigns as well as Eden’s brand and values. Act as a point of digital support for colleagues across the wider team, guiding and training staff on best practice.
- Develop monthly reports on digital performance using social monitoring tools, implementing impactful changes that boost performance and build our audiences and engagement levels.
- Maintain and care for key digital assets, including film, photography and our central image library.
- Support across the digital team when needed and cover annual leave and sickness to ensure no gap in service for Eden’s social media channels.
Demands of the Role
Education and Qualifications
Educated to degree level, ideally within a relevant discipline such as digital marketing, creative media or visual communication. Marketing or a visual design or production qualification is desirable. However, evidence of appropriate professional development within social media marketing is essential.
Knowledge and Skills
The successful post holder will be highly creative, with a strong visual eye and excellent copywriting skills. They will have several years’ experience in a similar role or environment with a proven track record of using social media to grow audiences, drive engagement, influence behaviour and encourage participation. An in-depth knowledge of social media platforms – including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn – as well as trends, tactics and optimisation required for different channels, is essential. They will have the ability to advise on digital approaches and contribute to the development of strategy and direction needed to deliver campaigns and our overarching objectives. Digital literacy, high competency using social media’s in-app tools, and experience using social media management and analytics tools, is essential. Highly experienced in capturing video and photography on an iPhone, as well as strong editing and graphics skills using Adobe software – such as Photoshop and Premiere Pro – and apps such as Edits or CapCut, is essential. Experience and skills using professional photography and videography equipment is strongly desired. Must have experience of social media community management and the reputational issues associated with it.
Decision Making
Works to short-term objectives, where the impact of judgements and decisions will be immediately obvious. Reports to Line Manager on a weekly basis. The post holder will need to have good creative judgment to advise on content, copy and social media channel optimisation. The post holder will need to be organised in time management and routinely need to reprioritise plans and activities to meet changing needs of the organisation at short notice with pace and accuracy.
Resourcefulness
Works within a fast-paced campaign environment with a high volume of activity. This role demands a good level of flexibility and ability to prioritise and juggle tasks. The post holder will be required to source, analyse and make recommendations on data both in the market and from social media analytics and other digital tools. Adaptive thinking is key, using best practice and experience to identify new approaches, research emerging trends and apply innovative ideas across all aspects of digital content to extend the reach and impact of our campaigns.
People and Asset Management
Support the Senior Digital Design Manager and supervise and coach the wider UK Communities and Morecambe teams in developing digital content in line with overall strategy, providing guidance on digital channels and approach.
Communication and Visitor Experience
Expert visual and written communication skills are integral to this role. The post holder will need strong copywriting and proofreading skills, alongside the ability to create, edit and optimise high-quality visual content for digital channels. They will be confident presenting and explaining ideas, research, feedback and recommendations clearly. The ability to communicate concisely and with impact, while engaging different digital audiences, will be key to success in the role. The post holder will also build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders, including social media influencers, agents, partners, funders, photographers and videographers.
Operational Environment
This role will be based at the Eden Project office in Morecambe, with regular site and offsite visits, for photography, filming and content capture. The role is primarily delivered Monday to Friday during regular working hours. However, flexible working, including some evening and weekends and some overnight travel across the UK (including to Eden Project in Cornwall several times a year) will be required. The role is part of a highly creative, hardworking, friendly and passionate team spread across the UK, with an office at Eden Project Morecambe and Eden Project in Cornwall.
