We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Director II Social Media (Hybrid) on our Editorial & Channel Strategy team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.

As a Director II Social Media, you will lead the AMA’s social media strategy and execution, building a high-performing, modern function that operates with speed, precision, and impact. This role is responsible for ensuring the AMA is timely, relevant, and influential in national health care conversations – particularly in fast-moving news cycles. The Director integrates real-time content, social listening, and paid media to maximize reach and engagement, while elevating production quality through internal talent and external partners. This role will modernize capabilities, build platform-specific strategies, strengthen performance, and position social media as a core driver of brand visibility and organizational impact.

Responsibilities:

Social Media Strategy and Execution

  • Lead development and execution of a comprehensive, enterprise-wide social media strategy aligned with organizational priorities, reputation goals, audience growth, and business objectives.
  • Serve as the organization’s senior social media strategist, advising executive leadership and cross-functional teams on emerging trends, platform dynamics, reputational risks, and engagement opportunities.
  • Build and oversee a sophisticated real-time communications capability that enables rapid response to breaking news, public health developments, advocacy priorities, and emerging issues.
  • Ensure platform-specific strategies are informed by audience insights, engagement trends, performance data, and evolving platform algorithms.
  • Drive innovation and continuous modernization of the AMA’s social media capabilities, workflows, governance, and content operations.
  • Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, competitor activity, and audience behavior to identify opportunities for growth, innovation, and strategic differentiation.
  • Manage and optimize a $1M+ paid social media budget, ensuring efficient investment, strong ROI, and measurable performance outcomes.

Analytics Performance Optimization

  • Lead a highly data-driven approach to social media strategy, using analytics and audience intelligence to guide content decisions, optimize performance, and improve organizational impact.
  • Establish KPIs, benchmarks, dashboards, and reporting frameworks that measure engagement, audience growth, sentiment, conversion, share of voice, and business impact.
  • Translate complex performance data into actionable recommendations for leadership and stakeholders across the organization.
  • Oversee testing strategies across platforms, formats, messaging, posting cadence, and audience targeting to continuously improve outcomes
  • Direct the team on social listening and trend analysis efforts to identify emerging conversations, reputational risks, audience opportunities, and actionable insights.

Content Development & Engagement

  • Oversee development and/or develop of high-quality, platform-specific, engaging content across formats, with emphasis on video, graphics, and emerging platforms.
  • Leverage new tools, including generative AI, to increase speed, efficiency, and scalability of content.
  • Manage external agencies and contractors to enhance creative output and production capacity.
  • Develop and implement strategies to leverage brand ambassadors and influencers to elevate AMA messaging and voice.
  • Contribute to training and tools that empower internal stakeholders to engage effectively on social platforms.
  • Develop, implement, and continually refine data-driven approaches to audience engagement to maximize followers, feedback loop, and impact.
  • Effectively integrate internal staff with external partners and identify new tools and approaches to improve capabilities and workflows.

Staff Management

  • Lead, mentor and provide management oversight for staff.
  • Responsible for setting objectives, evaluating employee performance, and fostering a collaborative team environment. Responsible for developing staff knowledge and skills to support career development.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications or relevant field required.
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in social media with a focus on audience engagement required.
  • Minimum 5+ years of experience in people management required: able to attract and develop talent.
  • Deep expertise in modern social media strategy, platform operations, audience development, and digital communications trends.
  • Proven experience telling new stories through social media, identifying risks, and rapidly creating consumable, compelling content.
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills, with demonstrated experience using performance metrics and audience insights to guide strategic decisions.
  • Proven success managing large-scale paid social campaigns and significant media budgets.
  • Strong understanding of social listening, reputation management, crisis communications, and rapid-response content strategies.
  • Experience overseeing and developing integrated multimedia content strategies, including video, graphics, and emerging storytelling formats.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and collaborate effectively across departments and stakeholder groups.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies, including generative AI applications for communications and content operations.
  • Exceptional judgment, communication skills, organizational leadership, and ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Some travel required.

This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $152,939-$206,519. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration and geographical location, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
