Contract Social Media

Job Description

Reporting to the Social Media Manager, the University of Sussex is looking for a talented, creative, and organised Digital Officer to join our External Relations division for a year-long fixed term contract, working on our digital and social media channels.

You’ll be an enthusiastic and confident social media expert, experienced in community management and social media marketing and production practices. You’ll have a clear understanding of the benefits of different social media channels for the University, and how they can help to reflect our vision and values.

You will need to be personable, self-motivated, organised, creative and diplomatic. Experience working in social and digital media and youth sectors is desirable.

In this key communications role, you’ll be working alongside the Social Media Manager and closely with many digital, communications and marketing colleagues from around the University, including from central teams, Schools and the Students’ Union.

You’ll understand the importance of collaboration with multiple teams and will have excellent organisation and prioritisation skills, to help manage multiple projects in a large, fast-moving organisation.

Your main responsibility will be to help our Social Media Manager run our central social channels and assist in creating content and campaigns around key events in the academic year – such as Clearing and graduation – for our broad audiences (eg. prospective/current students, alumni, staff, academics, donors, press etc.).

Your role will have a major focus on student communications, student experience and student recruitment.

You will help with the general smooth-running of our social media channels, including monitoring feeds, audience engagement and using social listening tools, such as TalkWalker, where appropriate.

You’ll also help to produce, publish (largely via Hootsuite) and assign our day-to-day social media posts on our platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube and LinkedIn).

This may include ideas development, copywriting, and content production such as filming and editing videos or stories, or creating graphic assets.

You’ll have a good knowledge of different social media platforms, their audiences, and what types of content work best on which channel. You’ll know what’s trending on Twitter, and your way around Snapchat Stories and Instagram Lives – and will always be able to spot the conversation starter.

You’ll understand how to leverage our social networks to enhance the University’s profile, our social reach and brand. Working alongside the Digital Analyst and the Social Media Manager, you’ll assist in recording and reporting on the impact of our activities and campaigns, to help evaluate their success.

You will help to manage and recruit students for our Student Digital Network –  students on a yearly scheme who help to produce content for our social feeds.

You will also be responsible for helping to oversee our Social Media Rota. This is a pool of staff from across External Relations who work on a shift basis to provide extra support monitoring our feeds, replying to queries, and publishing daily content.

You will also help to support and guide staff from across the organisation who run social media channels (e.g. the Library, Housing, International, Alumni, and School or subject specific channels etc). This may include helping to prepare and deliver social media training sessions.
